Inferno Protocol Prologue Walkthrough

Finish the guided descent before you trust a corridor, a paper map, or an unlabeled injector.

Prologue Walkthrough

The Prologue is not optional flavor. Inferno Protocol uses it as the real tutorial: inventory weight, the first environmental marks, the first QTEs, and the first proof that the maze will not stay polite. Steam lists an achievement for finishing it. Demo patches after Next Fest shoved quest hints into this chapter on purpose. If you skip it to “get to the real game,” you are volunteering to learn the same lessons while a Giant Rat is already on your back.

This page is the Prologue-focused companion to getting started. Read that page for the first settlement hour. Stay here when you want the descent itself, what to interact with, and how the chapter hands you into Junkyard without lying about what Early Access still withholds.

What the Prologue is for

Tektonic built a self-contained descent that sets tone before the full multi-layer loop. You are not meant to clear every biome here. You are meant to:

  • Learn that spray, chalk, and dropped objects beat any paper sketch you find on a wall.
  • Feel melee weight and the cost of swinging blind in a tight corridor.
  • Meet the idea that notes left by other people can point to injectors, exits, or things you should not approach.
  • Survive long enough to understand the settlement exists as a reset, not as the win condition.

Online co-op works during and after the Prologue, but the shared notebook stays hidden in this chapter. That is intentional. Do not plan a six-player calligraphy session until the descent is done. Details on voice range and walkies live in the co-op guide.

Before you press continue

Confirm the PC clears system requirements. Bind keys in controls and pick the correct microphone in settings if anyone will talk. Proximity voice is a survival mechanic later; bad device selection is how a mechanical keyboard becomes a dinner bell.

The free demo that carried the Prologue during Next Fest is gone. Early Access began 28 August 2026. If a friend still searches for a free Prologue download on the store, send them to the paid Early Access build instead of a dead demo link.

How to play the descent

Move slower than your ego wants. Every interactable note, scratch, and sketch is part of the language of the maze. Some lines are panic. Some are useful. The people who wrote them are not available for a follow-up interview.

Mark early. Leave a signature you will recognize after the corridor shifts. The Prologue is where you build the habit that maze navigation depends on. If you only mark once, mark the route that felt like it led toward light or voices — then verify by walking it twice.

Treat paper maps as suspects. A compass helps until it does not. Memory is the map Tektonic markets, and the Prologue is the sales pitch with teeth.

When a QTE starts, look at the prompt. Gamepad icons were localized in the mid-2026 demo updates. Mashing the wrong face button while a grab animation plays is how Prologue deaths become comedy for everyone else in the call.

Combat and scavenging in the tutorial slice

You will fight before you have a full craft tree. Melee has hitstop and locational reactions from the combat feedback patch. Staggering a threat mid-swing cancels damage — that lesson is cheaper here than in Swamp fog. Firearms you loot may contain random ammo; do not empty a magazine celebrating the first kill.

Harvest what you drop if the chapter gives you the prompt. Bones, armor, flesh, and organs are the real currency later. Scrap metal is a start, not a loadout. The full loop is explained in harvesting and crafting.

Injectors can appear as labeled promises — dash, rage, night vision, double jump, extra health — or as unlabeled gambles. The Prologue is a bad place to mainline mystery fluid. Save unlabeled experiments for a settlement bed and a squad that can drag you home. See injectors.

Hand-off into Early Access layers

When the Prologue ends, you are not “done with the tutorial zone” in a MMO sense. You are cleared to treat the settlement as home base and to push Junkyard, Jungle, and Swamp as the three playable layers. Winter and Desert remain calendar promises until a patch note says otherwise — track that on the roadmap and maze layers.

Achievements that name deeper layers are not a walkthrough. Rock Bottom style titles tease ice; they do not unlock a weekend trip. If your goal is an exit route rather than vibes, continue with how to find the exit.

Common Prologue mistakes

  • Sprinting past notes because “I already know horror games.”
  • Enabling proximity voice at full volume in a stacked corridor.
  • Trusting the first complete-looking paper map.
  • Injecting unlabeled serums to feel powerful before you have a bed.
  • Splitting a six-stack across three branches before anyone has marked the gate.

Play the chapter like it is trying to teach you a dialect. The rest of Inferno Protocol assumes you speak it.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers for Inferno Protocol survivors.

Can I skip the Inferno Protocol Prologue?

You should not. It teaches marks, inventory, and QTEs, and Steam tracks an achievement for finishing it. Demo patches also added quest hints into this chapter.

Is the Prologue still free as a demo?

No. The demo was removed around the 28 August 2026 Early Access window. Play the Early Access build on Steam.

Does co-op work in the Prologue?

Online co-op is supported, but the shared notebook stays hidden in this chapter. Finish the descent before you plan advanced squad tools. See the co-op guide.

What should I do right after the Prologue?

Return to getting started for the settlement loop, then maze navigation before a deep Junkyard push.
