Traps in Inferno Protocol
Plant them, back off, and let the maze finish the fight you did not want to take fair.
Tektonic’s store pitch treats traps as a core survival verb: find them or craft them, plant them in corridors, back off, and let the maze do the rest. Sometimes killing is easier when you are not the one in the room. This guide covers how to think about traps in Early Access Inferno Protocol — placement, timing, co-op etiquette, and the demo-era rules that still punish careless feet.
Pair this page with harvesting for materials, crafting for the build loop, and combat when a trap only softens a target.
Why traps matter in a shifting maze
A static arena game lets you learn one choke forever. Inferno Protocol rotates corridors. Traps buy you a rule that still works after a shift: denial on the path you just marked as “homeward.” They also reduce ammo spend and keep melee out of grab range against Giant Rats and dense zombie packs.
Traps are not a substitute for marks. A perfect bear trap on an unmarked intersection is how you kill your own teammate after the wall moves. Navigation still comes first — maze navigation.
Find versus craft
You will loot placed traps in the world and craft your own from harvest and scrap. Early Access will keep adding craft options; do not wait for a complete public spreadsheet. If you can craft a trap before a deep Jungle push, do it at the settlement stash instead of improvising mid-panic.
Bear traps received specific demo tuning: hold time went down, and they should not trigger while you are riding or climbing. If a patch changes that again, patch notes will say so. Until then, treat climb animations as safer than sprinting across your own wire.
Teleport traps exist as a dirty trick category. Demo notes said teleport traps can carry explosives with them. That is a squad tool and a grief vector. Call it before you plant it. Never invent a “funny” teleport into a settlement bed room.
Placement rules that keep friends alive
- Plant on retreat routes you already marked, not on the settlement threshold.
- One signature style per squad so everyone recognizes “our denial” versus world clutter.
- Leave a chalk tick or spray pip near the plant if the trap is hard to see in Swamp light.
- In co-op, the trap lead announces plants on walkie, not on proximity scream. Enemies hear you — co-op.
- Do not stack six traps in one tile “for content.” You want coverage on branches, not a cartoon pile.
Fire barrels and environmental denial sit next to traps in the same brain. Barrels light from torches and die in rain. Use them as area control, not as indoor heaters you forget about.
Using traps in a fight
Softening a patrol is the default: plant, pull with a short sound or a peek, fall back through the marked route, let the trap work, then finish with melee stagger or a spare shell. The combat feedback patch made mid-swing cancels real — combine that with a trapped ankle and you stop donating HP.
Trash-eater style enemies that explode when fed dynamite or grenades are a related trick, not a floor trap. Still: announce explosives. A surprised teammate and a surprised crocodile are the same wipe from different angles.
Solo trap play
Solo players should over-invest in traps because you cannot peel for yourself. Plant behind you as you push, not only at the destination. When you harvest, plant on the walk home. Solo pacing tips sit in the solo guide.
What we will not invent
We will not publish fake craft ratios or a complete trap tier list Tektonic has not shipped. When labels, recipes, or new trap types land with Winter or Desert, we rewrite from Steam news. Achievement names that sound trap-adjacent are hints, not unlock guides.
If you remember one line: traps are how you make a lying maze keep one honest promise — the corridor you prepared still hurts whatever follows you.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers for Inferno Protocol survivors.
Can you craft traps in Inferno Protocol?
Yes. Official copy says you can find traps or craft your own, then plant them in corridors. Materials loop through harvesting and crafting.
Do bear traps trigger while climbing?
Demo tuning said hold time was reduced and traps should not trigger while riding or climbing. Re-check patch notes after combat patches.
Are teleport traps real?
Yes. Demo notes mentioned teleport traps that can carry explosives. Treat them as squad tools, not practical jokes.
Should I trap the settlement door?
No. Plant on marked retreat routes in the maze. The settlement is for beds, trade, and craft — see settlement.
